Six weeks of

in-person Yurok language!

In case you missed the previous announcement, nek ‘new Britty Vigil-Burbank and I'm excited to announce our in-person Yurok language learning group!

Whether you're a beginner or looking to brush up on your Yurok language skills, this group will provide a supportive environment for you to learn and grow.

Here are some details about the group:

🗓 Duration: April 22, 2024 - May 27th, 2024 (six weeks)

*After six weeks, we will discuss taking a break or starting another six-week round of learning

🔁 Frequency: Once a week on Mondays

🗣 Format: We will focus on elder audio listening, how to pronounce Yurok sound, and vocabulary to support speaking the Yurok language. This will be a blend of language-learning techniques, conversational practice, and games designed to reinforce your learning.

⏰ Time: 5:30-6:30 pm
*Due to the time of day, light snacks and refreshments will be provided, but feel free to bring a dish of your choice if you would like to contribute.

📍Location: In-person @ United Indian Health Services in Arcata, Ca
*Out of respect for the comfort of the learners in the room, I will not be broadcasting or recording these—similar online-learning groups will begin in May

🌻 What to Expect: In week 1, we will get to know each other, hold space for a discussion about language learning, and decide as a group on a bite-size, conversational goal for the six weeks. You can expect an encouraging atmosphere to practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Yurok. Our language instructor will guide you, ensuring that you make steady progress throughout the six weeks and provide resources to expand vocabulary between meet-ups. Children are welcome to attend, but must remain supervised by an accompanying adult at all times.
